Really
So what would this have meant for this past year's nominations had this policy been in place? The nominees for the 09 Oscars were, of course:
Slumdog Millionaire
Frost/Nixon
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
Milk
The Reader
Here are my picks for the other five nominees:
Wall-E
The Wrestler
Revolutionary Road
The Dark Knight
Doubt
Would the presence of any of these films have blunted the momentum Slumdog had with the Academy? I'm not sure, but it might have helped Mickey Rourke's chances if his film had been up for the top prize.
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. β The Academy Awards are doubling the number of best-picture nominees from five to 10.I suppose this means twice as many movies will be the objects of virtual bribery among producers and Academy members.
Academy President Sid Ganis said at a news conference that the academy's board of governors made the decision to expand the slate. Ganis said the decision will open the field up to more worthy films for the top prize at Hollywood's biggest party.
The change takes effect with next year' Oscars on March 7.
The move is a return to Oscar traditions of the 1930s and '40s, when 10 nominees were common.
